There has always been in the history of the Benedictines the vocation towards the conservation and appreciation of art and culture. In the tranquil setting of the island of San Giorgio and precisely inside its holy architectural heritage, in 2022, too, the Benedicti Claustra, the non-profit organization of the monastic order, will welcome contemporary art installations and events by renowned international artists.
After the works of Anish Kapoor, John Pawson, and Sean Scully—to name just a few—from January 14 to April 3, 2022, the Palladian Basilica of San Giorgio Maggiore hosts Segno e Luce, the exhibition by Giampaolo Babetto, whose artistic sensibility perfectly embraces the spirituality of the location.
The exhibition is part of a larger cultural project of the Benedicti Claustra, called Rivelazioni in Coro, an initiative which aims at introducing the public to artworks of particular spiritual and historic-artistic value, temporarily welcoming them in the heart of the Palladian basilica and focusing the attention on the precious link between contemporary art and sacred places. The core of the project is precisely the High Choir of the Basilica, crafted in 1598 by the Flemish Van Den Brulle, which frames the exhibited artworks thus allowing a rich conversation on the arts created for the Gloria Dei.
For the 2022 edition, on the lectern of the high choir, Paduan master Babetto presents a novel work which masterly recalls the genealogy of Jesus starting from Jesse. The work is followed by an exhibition path which exceptionally involves the majestic Sacristy.
